biological systems, and the sequential machines which have been studied by various authors. The theory of sequential machines

of environmental alteration. The important concept of strong connectedness is most useful in this direction, and is used to

Membrane vesicles formed from spheroplasts of E. coli lysed in the presence of ADP and Pi produced ATP when an artificial proton gradient (acid outside) was formed across the membrane. ATP synthesis required Mg2+ and ADP, was inhibited by dicyclohyxylcarbodiimide and carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone, and stimulated by valinomycin in the presence of KCl. Synthesis was absent in a mutant lacking the Mg2+-ATPase. The optimum external pH was 2.5 when the internal pH was 8.2. The Y human chromosome has many ancient genes whose fidelity seems to have been preserved by tandem sequences and palindromic ‘hairpins’, compared/repaired by ‘gene conversion’. That a primary function of recombination machinery is DNA repair has been suggested, and rejected, several times; this new evidence is very persuasive. The process, better called gene conservation than gene conversion, could operate in all diploid organisms, accounting for the retention of long gene sequences without ‘informational meltdown’ ('concerted evolution'). It resembles rocket‐science computer‐redundancy error‐checking, comparison of three or four sequences, not just two. If recognition of errors in ‘converted’ sequences can be followed by either repair or rejection, the rejection option can account for the vast wastage of meiotic products. The repair option might be used in Drosophila oocytes and even zygotic nuclei, possibly other oocytes, ancient asexual lineages such as mycorrhizal fungi, perhaps the Y itself. Both evolutionary stasis (conservatism) and development and deployment of complex developmental modules can be understood in these terms so both the evolution of biodiversity and the practice of systematics may have these mechanisms as their bases. The main individual‐fitness and evolutionary advantages of diploidy were not primarily cloaking of recessive al‐leles, or allelic recombination and Mendelism, but conserving long DNA sequences. 相似文献

The sodium/proton antiport system of Escherichia coli has been characterized by the effect of Na+ on the pH gradient established by respiration in everted membrane vesicles. The system has equal affinity for Na+ and Li+. Between pH 7 and 9 dissipation of Δψ, membrane potential, has no effect on the affinity for Na+ but decreases the V of the antiport reaction. Uptake of 22Na+ by everted membrane vesicles was observed using flow dialysis. 相似文献

The influence of a moderately intense static magnetic field on movement patterns of free swimming Paramecium was studied. When exposed to fields of 0.126 T, these ciliated protozoa exhibited significant reduction in velocity as well as a disorganization of movement pattern. Rapid diagnosis of the etiology of infection is highly important for an effective treatment of the infected patients. Bacterial and viral infections are serious diseases that can cause death in many cases. The human immune system deals with many viral and bacterial infections that cause no symptoms and pass quietly without treatment. However, oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy have a very weak immune system caused by leukopenia, and even minor pathogen infection threatens their lives. For this reason, physicians tend to prescribe immediately several types of antibiotics for febrile pediatric oncology patients (FPOPs). Uncontrolled use of antibiotics is one of the major contributors to the development of resistant bacteria. Therefore, for oncology patients, a rapid and objective diagnosis of the etiology of the infection is extremely critical. Current identification methods are time‐consuming (>24 h). In this study, the potential of midinfrared spectroscopy in tandem with machine learning algorithms is evaluated for rapid and objective diagnosis of the etiology of infections in FPOPs using simple peripheral blood samples. Our results show that infrared spectroscopy enables the diagnosis of the etiology of infection as bacterial or viral within 70 minutes after the collection of the blood sample with 93% sensitivity and 88% specificity. 相似文献
